A Japanese sweets store with a long history, established over 550 years ago in the area where is now known as the Fushimi district of Kyoto.
During the Edo Period (1603-1868), Yorinobu Tokugawa (the first lord of the Kishu Domain) was very fond of the sweets of Surugaya; therefore when the Kishu Domain was established, Surugaya moved to Kishu (now known as Wakayama Prefecture) with the lord.
From then on, the sweets dedicated to the Kishu lords were Surugaya’s sweets. One of them is the Honnoji-Manju (steamed bun), which still remains as one of our most famous products.
